Raring to go “Wild About Wood”

The coracle maker is checking he’s got enough paddles, the wood turners are firing up their lathes, the story-teller is brushing up on her woodland folklore tales and the heavy horse logger is hoping he’s packed enough hay! Everyone at The Arboretum Trust, Kew at Castle Howard is putting the final touches to preparations for the first ever Wild About Wood Festival, and is excited about welcoming visitors to this brand new event.

The Festival, which will run annually from now on, promises to be a great day out for the whole family.

For the more intrepid visitor there’s the opportunity to paddle a coracle on the Arboretum’s lake, or to get a bird’s eye view of things and have a go at tree-climbing. There are fascinating demonstrations of a wide range of traditional woodcrafts including pole lathe turning, heavy horse logging, willow weaving, tree stump sculpting, furniture making, wood carving and basket-making.  Mini-tours of the arboretum offer a glimpse of the beauty and ecological importance of this very special place.

The Discovery Zone is dedicated to younger visitors. Investigate the inhabitants of the Arboretum Lake, Meet a Tree, learn about building with oak or go for an “explorienteer” amongst other things! Little (and not so little) visitors can also enjoy forest fairytales and learn how to write in Ogham, the Celtic tree alphabet.

Folk and traditional English musicians will entertain the crowds throughout the weekend, and there’s a delicious variety of locally sourced food and drink to enjoy – everything from juicy venison burgers to delectable cakes to luscious strawberries and cream. It’s a little early for Christmas shopping, but you’re sure to find something to tempt you to make a purchase amongst the dozens of arts and crafts stalls!”?
